On a whim, I decided to trek out to The City this evening to listen to some music at Cafe du Nord with my sister and brother in law. The bill included Visqueen, Steve Burns and the Starlight Mints… all good acts, and worth a listen.
Although the Starlight Mints were headlining, the main attraction seemed to be Steve. I think people from all around came out of sheer curiousity about him and his act. I should know, I was one of them (for those of you who don’t remember, Steve is the former live-action counterpart of the childrens’ program Blue’s Clues). There seemed to be a built in audience of parents of children that watch(ed) his show, and it was a bit funny to observe them amongst the crowd of hipsters. Darn! I guess shoulda brought a Hipster Bingo card with me. There were also a few groupies, some single moms, some young women that swooned over him and sung along with every song.
I had heard the Starlight Mints on college radio before, I just didn’t know it was them until I heard them starting to perform tonight. They were also the backup band for Steve during his segment of the show. Good stuff. I also had a nice chat with the lead singer of Visqueen after the show, and I obtained one of their demo discs to try and get them some exposure on the local college stations, and possibly elsewhere.
Steve is a very friendly and personable guy… he’s quite approachable since he is of small stature, a lot shorter than most people expect. He drew some dust mites on the toes of my Chuck Taylors… more freakin’ awesome than any autograph I’ve ever received (well, besides John Flansburgh, of course).
Photos and some short video clips from the show are posted here.
The City…
I suppose I should start calling it that.
Considerin there aren’t any other cities I would capitalize like that.
Thanks.
Oh. And by the way.
Feel free to refer to Ohio as “that Cowland of yours” anytime you want to. =)
