I forgot where else I saw this being done, but I thought it was an interesting idea. I fired up iTunes to see what my most played songs were for the past year (although, it’s not entirely accurate since I got my PowerBook in August). Here are the results starting with the highest play count:
- Move Your Feet: Junior Senior
- Big Time: Peter Gabriel
- Boyz n’ the Hood: Dynamite Hack
- Hardware Store: Weird Al Yankovic
- The Beer Song: Matt Stone & Trey Parker
- Goody Two Shoes: Adam Ant
- Pac Man Power Pill: Aphex Twin
- Know Your Chicken: Cibo Matto
- Everyday I Write the Book: Elvis Costello
- Hate to Say I Told You So: The Hives
I realize that this list is largely influenced by my usage of iTunes during our regular poker nights, during which we play a particular “Poker Mix” playlist.
I was then inspired, out of sheer curiousity, to tweak the Smart Playlist to see what results I would get if I asked for my highest rated songs that I played the least…
Here’s that list, starting with the least played:
- Keep Fishin’: Weezer
- She’s an Angel (live): They Might be Giants
- Violin: They Might be Giants
- Put a Lid on It: Squirrel Nut Zippers
- Nata Di Marzo: Pizzicato Five
- Shoehorn with Teeth: Moxy Fruvous with Da Vinci’s Notebook
- Enough: Dance Hall Crashers
- Hello, Goodbye: The Beatles
- No Sleep Till Brooklyn: The Beastie Boys
- Love Theme from Rampo: Akira Senju (Mystery of Rampo Soundtrack)
So iTunes proves to be a useful tool in observing music listening behavior. The scariest part was finding out that I have 2025 unplayed songs in my library. INSANE! Too bad I can’t have these lists affected by my iPod in here as well… that would probably be a more accurate depiction of my listening habits.
