the long wait

Ack! The time has moved way too fast. I am currently in wait for the airport shuttle to pick me up to go to SFO… too bad I couldn’t get a flight from SJC. Ah well, more time for napping. ;)

I will have scattered net connect over in Japan, so not to fear. I’ll probably be writing blog entries offline and uploading them at once. I am terribly excited and scared and nervous… but I’m sure I will handle the flight and getting around my first steps of Japan just fine by myself.

See you on the flip side!

After a much needed morning of sleeping in (damn, that felt good), we headed to a local dive for some terribly unhealthy brunch (what d’ya expect, it’s comfort food). Lemme just say that we haven’t eaten anything else today.

During our late breakfast, we were reminded by today’s Merc that the new Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. library in San Jose was now open. Granted, their Grand Opening takes place this upcoming Saturday, August 16, but you can still drop by the library under normal operations right now (except for Friday, when they are preparing for the big day).

This place in unimaginably HUGE… I was overwhelmed. Eight floors of library! Our heads were going to explode! Since this library is a collaboration of the public and university libraries, we knew it HAD to be good… oh, and so it was! We couldn’t possibly absorb it all in one visit. I can see myself hanging out there a LOT.

Oh, and the important question… do they have free Wi-Fi? I am not exactly sure, but they DO provide the studying areas with pop-up power outlets and ethernet jacks. Very cool. Combine that with private study rooms with huge glass windows overlooking downtown, and you’re set.

The library also houses its own Cafe… and get this, they allow food and drink (within reason) within the library. I have my concerns about that, and hope that it doesn’t get outta hand. I mean, heck, who wants to find a big coffee stain on the otherwise pristine book that they are checking out of the library? The other thing that bothers me is that there is a lack of free or discounted parking for library patrons… it’s a ridiculous 75ยข per 20 minutes at the nearest parking garage during weekday operating hours. I might as well take the VTA light rail to downtown… *sigh*

On Friday, I had a fun geeky day with Sam. I love mac geeks, I am almost always guaranteed to get along with them… and it was incredibly easy to get along with Sam (granted, he would rather have a big shiny SUV whilst I prefer a small car like a Mini Cooper, but we’ll forgive him *wink*).

After a quick bite to eat the the exotic chez Boston Market in trendy Fremont, we were well on our way to fighting traffic along the 880. Destination? The Apple Company Store, Cupertino. We hit a snag along the 880, so I took a detour along San Tomas Expressway, to give Sam a drive-by tour of a few tech companies… Creative, Cadence, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Sun, Intel, and of course, Nvidia.

We arrived at the Apple Campus after the scenic route through Santa Clara/San Jose/Cupertino areas… but heck, it was not a problem at all. We pulled into the parking lot at 1 Infinite Loop, the excitement building. I was here only a mere few months ago at a SVMUG meeting, but Sam had never been. It’s always more exciting when you go with a buddy anyways. :)

Wow, um… is this store dangerous, or what? I scored myself a really nice embroidered Antigua sweatshirt, and Sam, well, he just plain scored, haha. Like a kid in a candy store, I tell ya. Good times.

We’re trying to plan a walk on the Golden Gate bridge next Thursday… so if anyone else is game, let me know!

angel adventure

This afternoon, I went to go visit Joe at the hospital. I hadn’t seen him for about a week, which is longest I’ve gone without seeing him since learning about his brain tumor. I’m glad I drove up to The City today to see him. Today was a good day.

He was bright, alert, and cheery. Huge difference from last week, when he was reeling in pain in his chest from developing pneumonia, and he could barely move. He was talkative, and his eyes glowed.

I had one of the happiest moments that I’ve had in a long time today. Joe had a physical therapy session today (his brain tumor has caused him to have partial paralysis in the left side of his body), and he was able to sit up and support himself quite well. He got up and walked, with lots of strength! The happy moment came when he was on his way back to his room from the gym, he was still walking with lots of strength (believe me, this is an amazing accomplishment in comparison to last week), and I said, “Hey!” to him, with a big smile. What I got in return was a huge beaming grin and a “Hey!” in return as he walked towards me. It felt awesome… the highlight of my week.

Here’s where I get to the “help a sister out” part of this blog entry:

I will be participating in the Bay Area Angel Adventure for the National Brain Tumor Foundation on 21 June, 2003. What is the Angel Adventure? It is a 5k walk along the San Francisco waterfront to raise funds to support brain tumor research. Click below to donate… no minimum!

Text link if the above button doesn’t work for you

You can also snail mail donations if you desire.(unless you live in CA, don’t snail mail me donations, since I’d probably receive it too late)

I am trying to raise at least $500 for the event. I would be ecstatic if I could raise more in Joe’s name! Brother, could you spare a dime? Or a few? ;) I would really appreciate it as well if you can help spread the word with a link or two on your own blogs/sites. Feel free to swipe above button and link to this entry.

Thank you so much in advance. Let’s show ‘em!

(COMMENTING CLOSED ON THIS ENTRY. Please contact me if you would like to donate to the Joe Ferguson Foundation)

It looks like I am off to Southern CA for a few days to visit a friend who has fallen ill.

I do not know how my net access will be, but I’ll be sure to AudBlog once or twice. :)

In the meantime, please visit a few local friends, some of who I will be seeing next week at the Meetup:

See you on the flip side…
