social butterflies in the stomach

There are way too many networking sites out there these days. Almost everyone and their mother (and some of their dogs) are on Friendster, so I won’t really go into detail about that service.

I will say that Friendster was the best one of these networking sites that I have used. I’m sure that we have all received emails from various friends/colleagues/ex-lovers to invite you to join the newest networking site where you can meet/greet/date/sleep with a friend of a friend (or, the more commonly acronym FOAF). We’ve all wondered if these things really work, are they just like collecting Pokemon?

You can decide for yourself… or at least influence a decision or two in the comments. Here are a few networking sites that I know of (feel free to add any that I missed):

  1. Friendster (duh)

  2. Ryze: Good for professional networking. Meet other professionals with similar interests!
  3. Tribe.net: I really like this one… as Xeni Jardin says, Tribe.net “seems to facilitate certain kinds of interaction (read: non-gonad-driven) more elegantly than some of the other services out there right now”.
  4. Everyone’s Connected: another “six degrees” kind of site, kinda crummy UI, but it does the job.
  5. LinkedIn: a very professional professional’s networking site. Good if you need a job, or need to fill a job.
  6. ecademy: another business networking site. I don’t know much about this one.
  7. Ringo: Not the beatle. The social networking site. Much like friendster.

Now, go forth and network to your heart’s content.

joey.jpgMy dear friend Joe (whom I’ve known since we were silly teenagers), at a mere age of 26, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor which is cancerous. Needless to say, I was floored when I heard the news. Joe was the last person I would suspect that would be hit with such an ailment. But he’s a fighter, and he’s gonna kick this thing in the ass.

Support the Fight!

I am adding a little gray ribbon to my site (as well as sporting a real one on my lapel), courtesy of Support the Fight, to encourage awareness of Joe’s and many others’ illness. There are other ribbons to represent other types, if someone close to you is fighting a different kind of cancer.

Support the fight. Choose Hope.

Apologies for the lack of posts these past couple of days. The least I could do is provide you with some places to go. Here are my freshest Friday Finds:

  1. Inefficiency.org: humor, wit and Super Battles

  2. All of the Good Names Were Taken: insert witty description here
  3. The Colonel Sanders Conspiracy: he puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes you crave it fortnightly
  4. Comedic Cadavers: delightful randomness

Please share some of your Friday Finds in the comments as well! Enjoy your weekends!

I don’t really have a lot to say today, mostly cos this is the first week of the Spring Quarter, which in turn makes a very busy geeky chick indeed. Here’s some links of interest for the moment:

Enjoy your Tuesday! :)

new radio show!

My friend Robyn is trying his hand at this inter-web radio thingy.

Tune into his Shoutcast Station, “The Robyn California Show” at 6pm PST (9pm EST) for some fun discussion on “The state of the world, Duct Tape, how the French Suck, Valentine’s Day, and how Love sucks”, but not in the same breath, I assume…

Details at his radio webpage, robyncalifornia.com/radio.

Where Am I?
