What's in a Name?

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Glenda and I were having a conversation not too long ago about names, and which ones seemed to be popular amongst our other ‘cousins’…

Me:I don’t think I know any other glendas
Glenda: yeah, i wasn’t aware glenda was a popular filipino name?
Glenda: then there is also glynnis
Me: glynnis? never heard that one
Glenda: me neither!
Me: huh, namefinder thingies say it’s Celtic
Glenda: glenda is also celtic.
Me: yeah
Glenda: no. hrm. actually welsh.
Glenda: glenda is welsh.
Me: actually another site says Welsh for Glynnis too
Me: “Either a variant of GLENYS or an elaboration of the Welsh word glyn meaning “valley”.”
Me: and “Glenys” is “Elaboration of the Welsh word glan meaning “pure” or “holy”.”
Me: oh, fack. hahahah
Me: Courtney: From a surname which was derived either from a French place name meaning “domain of CURTIS” or else from a French nickname meaning “short nose”.
Glenda: i like your name. your name is the jam.
Me: SHORT NOSE?
Me: the filipino nose!
Glenda: LOL

So even though my name is French, there is a logical reason why I have that name. Filipinos have short noses, yeah.

Damn.

Abort, Retry, Delete?

You know it’s bad when you start using compu-talk in conversations…

R: I’m on the verge of a career crisis!
C: ruh oh!
R: hit restart!
C: force quit!
R: my boss already did that to me 2 months ago!
C: hahaha… unexpectedly quit
R: hahaha
R: process contains fatal errors
C: abort, retry, delete?
R: i want to reformat my hard drive
C: your internal or external?
R: if only it were that easy
R: hahaha
R: internal, save the external in case I change my mind
C: you can still boot from the external
C: perhaps you should make a backup
R: I’m hanging
R: too many processes at once
C: multi-task processing
R: maybe it will work itself out after some sleep mode
C: I recommend defragmenting
C: and some anti-virus protection
R: I’m so fragmented
R: I’d tell you about my bits but that’s nsfw
C: hahahah
C: that really burns my disc.
C: (this is getting bad)
R: hahaha, “getting”
C: dammit
C: Okay, blogging this
C: haha
R: oh boy…

On getting sick and being a geek girl

I love how a simple “how are you” conversation takes turns for true entertainment (and in turn, blog fodder). In a chat with a good friend yesterday:

T: So how’s your day treating you?
C: not bad. I’m still sick
C: doctor won’t take me till Thursday
T: that sucks. Getting worse?
C: eh, it’s stable
T: Yuck. Well, only 2 days, I suppose. You’ll just have to curtail those early AM drug, alcohol and sex romps you’ve been doing for the last couple of weeks… it wears the body down.
C: ahahaha, sure, T
C: you know me too well ;)
T: I’m just looking out for you… not judging at all.
C: heh. well, I’m a good girl, really
C: I’ve just been way too socially active lately.
T: I know you are. And good girls are always much better than bad girls. The idea of a bad girl is… interesting, but in reality, good girls are so much sweeter.
C: O:-)
T: Well… that may be taking it a little too far. ;)
C: hahaha
C: thanks for the vote of confidence :)
T: Well. c’mon, you need a little bit of badness in you… just a smidgen.
C: yeah, I have a glimmer :D
T: A twinkle of badness. That’s okay. As long as most of you is sweet… and geeky.
T: That’s the funniest thing. After I tell you about recording HD on the Myth PVR, you look at me and say, “that’s so hot.” Cool.
C: haha :D
C: cos it IS
T: Well, much better than sitting and talking about different wines and blather like that.
C: blah
C: I like wine, but that shit is boring for convos
T: True. And I don’t like wine.
C: haha

Yeah, uh, give me good High Definition video over a good wine anyday. Or better yet, give me both at the same time.

Geek Flu

It’s not fun being sick and at home. I find that I do have the most considerate roomie, though.

Scene: past midnight earlier this week. I am in my room tinkering on my laptop when he arrives home.

Jason: Wait a minute, are you awake?
Jason: Am I being semi-quiet for no reason? :P
Courtney: yeah i’m in bed with the lappy

IRL (like, spoken, with voices and stuff):
Jason: Hello!
Courtney (raspy voice): Hi… *cough*

Jason: Oh, gosh.
Jason: You don’t sound so good.
Jason: Can I get you some tea?
Jason: Zinc?
Jason: Vitamin C?
Courtney: hee, i’m ok, thx
Jason: okiedoke.

*cough, cough…*

Jason: Ach, pobrecita.
Courtney: yah, I’m in quarantine :/
Jason: :(

We communicate well.

WP 1.5 Upgrade Party

February 16th, 2005 § 2 comments § permalink

Last night was the WordPress 1.5 Upgrade party at Chez Mullenweg on a cold, rainy night. I braved the elements to hang with the some of the most fun-loving bloggers I know.

Matt kindly provided install/upgrade services for some bloggers, whilst some DIY’ers (such as your humble correspondent) sat in the living room and performed the painless upgrade ourselves (it really is painless!). If you have not converted your blog to WordPress yet, or if you have been thinking about starting a blog, there is no better time to do so… the install itself is a beautiful process. WP is licensed under the GNU General Public License, which in short, means that the software will remain free (as in beer) for its users.

Jason D. provided a wonderful show for those near and far, via Jason‘s iChat session with Sam. I now present to you a few clips of Thor’s profession of love:

I have also Flickr’d a handful of photos, you can find them (and other attendees’ photos) under the tag “upgradeparty”.

Where Am I?
